About Ibiza
Ibiza, known locally as Eivissa, is the third largest Balearic island. The capital, Ibiza Town, holds about 55,000 residents and is dominated by Dalt Vila, the fortified UNESCO-listed old town above the harbour. The wider island has a year-round population of around 160,000 and a summer peak many times higher, with international DJ residencies in San Antonio and Platja d’en Bossa balanced by quiet north-coast bays, pine forests and the salt flats of Ses Salines.
The island is around 572 km² and remains greener than its reputation suggests, with pine forests in the north and protected farmland around Santa Gertrudis. Dalt Vila has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 for its Phoenician, Roman and Renaissance remains, while the salt flats of Ses Salines (a natural park since 2001) sit between the airport and Es Cavallet beach.
Getting around
Ibiza Town, the marina and Dalt Vila are easily walked, with steep climbs up to the cathedral. A bus network connects the airport, Ibiza Town, San Antonio, Santa Eulalia and the main beaches, and the Discobus runs at night in summer. Roads can be slow at weekends from late June to early September, when villa traffic and event crowds peak. For groups arriving with luggage or on early-morning flights, a pre-booked private transfer is usually faster and less stressful than waiting at the rank.
Best time to visit
May, June, September and early October are the most comfortable months, with sea temperatures around 21 to 24 °C and the main beaches open without the August crush. The club season builds from late May, peaks in July and August (35 °C inland is possible) and closes in early October. From November to April many resorts and clubs shut, although the old town, marina restaurants and inland villages stay open.
The nightlife calendar still drives demand. Club opening parties land in late May, closing parties stretch from late September into early October, and the International Music Summit each May fills mid-week flights. Travellers visiting for hiking, sailing or family beach days usually prefer June and September, when the island is open but quieter than peak August.
Transferring from Ibiza’s airports
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) is the island’s only commercial airport, 7 km from Ibiza Town. It runs a single terminal and is heavily seasonal, with summer movements several times the winter base. Pre-booked private transfers cover all parts of the island, with flight tracking, 60 minutes of free wait time and a fixed price that does not change at night or on weekends.
Common transfer routes
Typical Ibiza routes include:
- Ibiza Airport to Ibiza Town and Marina Botafoch, around 15 minutes.
- Ibiza Airport to Playa d’en Bossa, around 10 minutes.
- Ibiza Airport to San Antonio (Sant Antoni), around 20 minutes.
- Ibiza Airport to Santa Eulalia and Es Canar, around 25 to 30 minutes.
- Ibiza Airport to Portinatx and Cala Sant Vicent, around 45 to 60 minutes.
Day trips by transfer often pair the airport pickup with a stop on the way to the hotel. Popular stops include the Ses Salines viewpoint, the hippy market at Las Dalias on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and the sunset bars at Cala Comte. Operators can also schedule split journeys where the driver waits for a short ferry to Formentera and resumes the booking on the return.
