About Lisbon
Lisbon is built across seven hills on the north bank of the Tagus, with around 575,000 people in the city and roughly 3.0 million across the wider metropolitan area. The historic Baixa was rebuilt on a grid after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami, so the streets are wider and more orderly than in Alfama, the medieval quarter that climbs towards the Castelo de São Jorge. Belém, 6 km west of the centre, holds the UNESCO-listed Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, both built during the Age of Discovery when Lisbon was the wealthiest port in Europe.
The city’s character is shaped by the river. The 25 de Abril Bridge crosses to Almada in the south and the Vasco da Gama Bridge stretches 17 km to the east, giving views from almost every miradouro. Cruise ships dock at the Santa Apolónia and Jardim do Tabaco terminals, a short walk from Alfama, while ferries cross to Cacilhas and Barreiro from the Cais do Sodré pier.
Getting around
Lisbon’s hills make a transit pass worthwhile, even for short stays. The Metro runs four lines from roughly 06:30 to 01:00 and is the fastest way to cross the city. Trams 28 and 15 are slower but more scenic, and the elevators at Glória and Bica save on uphill walks. A single Metro ticket costs EUR 1.80, and a 24 hour pass covering the Metro, trams, buses and funiculars is EUR 6.80.
For airport runs, late arrivals or hotels in the steeper parts of Alfama and Bairro Alto, a pre-booked private transfer avoids the queue at the LIS taxi rank and the steep cobbled lanes that local taxis sometimes refuse on foot. Drivers know which drop-off points work for cars and which require a short walk.
Best time to visit
March to May and September to October are the sweet spots, with daytime highs of 19 to 26 degrees and far fewer cruise passengers than midsummer. June to August are warm and dry, regularly hitting 30 degrees, and hotel rates climb across the Algarve overflow. November to February is mild but wetter, with average highs around 15 degrees and occasional Atlantic storms.
The Festas dos Santos Populares in June fill Alfama with sardines, music and decorations for almost the whole month, and Web Summit in November packs the city for four days, pushing hotel rates significantly higher.
Transferring from Lisbon’s airports
Lisbon Portela (LIS) is unusually close to the city for a capital, sitting 7 km from the centre. A pre-booked transfer takes 15 to 25 minutes outside rush hour, with a fixed price and a driver meeting you in arrivals with a name sign. Faro (FAO) in the Algarve, 280 km south, is used by travellers heading straight to a beach resort rather than into Lisbon itself.
The Tagus cruise terminals at Santa Apolónia and Jardim do Tabaco are about 12 minutes from LIS by road, making air-to-cruise day transfers straightforward to coordinate.
