About Madrid

Madrid is Spain’s capital and largest city, with about 3.3 million residents inside the municipality and roughly 6.7 million in the wider region. It sits on the Meseta Central at 667 m above sea level, which gives the city its famously bright light and cold, dry winters. The historic core around Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace and Puerta del Sol fits inside a 2 km square and is mostly walkable.

The cultural draw is the Paseo del Arte triangle of the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, plus the Retiro park and the Salamanca shopping district. Madrid-Barajas is the country’s largest airport, handling more than 60 million passengers in 2024, and the two main stations, Atocha and Chamartín, anchor the AVE high-speed network reaching Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and the French border.

Getting around

Madrid’s metro is one of the most extensive in Europe with 13 lines and around 300 km of track. Trains run every 2 to 5 minutes at peak and a 10-trip ticket is the standard tourist option. The EMT bus network fills the gaps, and Cercanías commuter trains link Atocha, Chamartín and the airport.

For transfers with luggage, the metro from Barajas requires a line change at Nuevos Ministerios and an airport supplement of 3 EUR per passenger. A pre-booked private transfer skips all of that, with the driver waiting inside the correct terminal so there is no guessing between T1–T3 and T4.

Best time to visit

April to June is the most comfortable window, with daytime highs of 18–28°C and long evenings ideal for tapas in La Latina. October sits in the same comfort band, with mild days and the autumn light that the Prado was practically built for.

July and August routinely top 35°C, and locals empty out for the coast through August. December to February is dry and crisp at 5–12°C, with very few rainy days but cold nights. New Year’s Eve at Puerta del Sol draws large crowds, so book transfers well in advance.

Transferring from Madrid’s airports

Madrid-Barajas (MAD) is the only commercial airport serving the city directly. The four terminals split into two clusters: T1, T2 and T3 sit next to each other and handle Schengen and non-EU traffic on a mix of carriers, while T4 and the satellite T4S are home to Iberia, Iberia Express, British Airways and the rest of the Oneworld alliance. A free shuttle bus links the two clusters every few minutes, but a private transfer goes directly to your terminal.

Drive times into central Madrid are 25 to 45 minutes via the M-11 and A-2. The morning peak from 07:30 to 09:30 and the evening peak from 17:00 to 20:00 add 10 to 20 minutes. Ciudad Real (CQM) and Valladolid (VLL) are sometimes used as backups for diverted flights but are 200+ km away.

Common transfer routes

  • Madrid-Barajas (MAD) T1–T3 to Puerta del Sol: 13 km, 25–40 minutes
  • Madrid-Barajas (MAD) T4 to Puerta del Sol: 16 km, 30–45 minutes
  • Madrid-Barajas (MAD) to Atocha Station: 15 km, 25–45 minutes
  • Madrid-Barajas (MAD) to Chamartín Station: 9 km, 15–25 minutes
  • Madrid-Barajas (MAD) to IFEMA convention centre: 4 km, 8–15 minutes
  • Madrid-Barajas (MAD) to Toledo: 90 km, 75–90 minutes

Booking your Madrid transfer

Pre-booking takes the friction out of a Barajas arrival. With four terminals, two clusters and a fast ring road, the difference between a smooth 25-minute ride into Sol and a 50-minute taxi-rank wait followed by a metered run comes down to having a driver already in arrivals when you land. The fare is fixed at booking, with no airport pickup surcharge and no metered surprise at the end.

Flight tracking adjusts the pickup window automatically, the first 60 minutes of waiting are included and meet-and-greet is at the named exit of your terminal. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pickup, and you can pay online via Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, iDEAL, Wero or PayPal.
