About Melbourne

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and Australia’s second-largest city, home to about 5.1 million people spread across the bay and the Yarra River valley. The CBD is laid out on the Hoddle Grid, a compact 1 by 0.5 mile rectangle of laneways, arcades and Victorian-era arcades, ringed by inner suburbs like Fitzroy, Carlton, Richmond and South Yarra that each carry their own character.

The city is best known for coffee, sport and weather that changes four times before lunch. Melbourne hosts the Australian Open in January, the F1 Australian Grand Prix in March, the Melbourne Cup in November and AFL grand finals at the MCG every September. Beyond events, Melbourne is the corporate base for ANZ, NAB and Telstra, which keeps inbound business travel through Tullamarine reliably strong.

Getting around

Melbourne runs the largest tram network in the world, with 250 km of track and a free tram zone covering the entire CBD. The Myki card covers trams, trains and buses. Trains radiate out from Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations to every major suburb, and the SkyBus runs from Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross in about 25 minutes for around A$24 one way.

For door-to-door travel with luggage or for late-night arrivals, a pre-booked private transfer usually wins on time and predictability, especially when the SkyBus is full or trams stop running after midnight. Ride-hail apps operate citywide but surge heavily during the Australian Open finals weekend, the Grand Prix and any major MCG event.

Best time to visit

Melbourne’s peak runs from October through April, when daytime highs sit between 20 and 30 °C. November and February are the most reliable months for sunshine and the most popular for outdoor events at Federation Square and along the Yarra. January and March bring the Australian Open and the Grand Prix respectively, both pushing hotel rates and MEL airport demand higher.

Winter (June to August) is cool and grey, with highs around 13 °C and frequent drizzle, but it is also the cheapest time to visit and the best for Yarra Valley wineries and snow trips to Mount Buller. Spring carnival season in October and November brings the Melbourne Cup and a notable spike in inbound flights.

Transferring from Melbourne’s airports

Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine, MEL) is the city’s main gateway, located 23 km north-west of the CBD. It handles roughly 37 million passengers a year across four terminals: T1 (Qantas domestic), T2 (international), T3 (Virgin domestic) and T4 (low-cost domestic). All terminals share a single forecourt, so pre-booked transfers pick up from clearly signed bays directly outside arrivals.

The drive into the CBD takes about 25 minutes via the M2 Tullamarine Freeway and CityLink, or roughly 45 minutes during morning and evening rush. CityLink tolls are included in the pre-booked price. Avalon Airport (AVV), about 50 km south-west of the CBD, handles a smaller volume of domestic and Jetstar international flights and is best served by pre-booked transfer given its limited public transport links.

For cruise arrivals, Station Pier in Port Melbourne sits about 5 km south of the CBD and serves ocean cruise lines visiting Melbourne. The Spirit of Tasmania overnight ferry to Devonport now sails from Geelong’s Spirit of Tasmania Quay, about an hour south-west of the CBD. The drive between Station Pier and MEL airport takes around 30 minutes outside peak.
