About Nice

Nice is the capital of the Côte d’Azur and the largest city on the French Riviera, with around 348,000 residents and several million visitors a year. The Old Town (Vieux Nice) sits between the pebble beaches of the Baie des Anges and the Colline du Château, while the 19th-century Promenade des Anglais runs for nearly 7 km along the seafront. It is a working city as well as a resort, with universities, a cruise port and one of France’s busiest regional airports.

The local economy mixes tourism with research, finance and tech, anchored by the Sophia Antipolis science park 20 km inland. Cruise traffic feeds Port Lympia at the eastern end of the seafront, where ferries to Corsica also operate year-round. The international population is large: more than 15 percent of residents are foreign nationals, and English, Italian and Russian are widely spoken alongside French and the local Niçard dialect.

Getting around

Central Nice is compact and walkable. Three tram lines connect the airport, the main station Gare Nice Ville, Place Masséna and the port, with single tickets at modest flat fares. Local buses extend along the coast to Villefranche, Monaco and Cannes, and the SNCF coastal line runs roughly every 20 to 30 minutes between Cannes and Ventimiglia in Italy. For early flights, late cruise arrivals or hotels in the hills above the city, a private transfer is usually the calmer choice.

Best time to visit

May to September is high season, with sea temperatures of 20 to 25 °C and reliable sunshine. June carries the Fête de la Musique, and the Monaco Grand Prix in late May puts pressure on every road and hotel within 30 km of Nice. October still feels warm, and prices drop noticeably from November to March, although some seasonal restaurants close and ferry schedules thin out.

Festivals shape the calendar. The Nice Carnival in February remains a draw despite the cooler temperatures, the Cannes Film Festival in May fills hotels for 50 km in either direction, and the Nice Jazz Festival in July fills the Place Masséna. Booking transfers a week or more ahead during any of these events is strongly recommended.

Transferring from Nice’s airports

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) is the main gateway, about 7 km from the centre and 20 minutes by road in normal traffic. Two terminals handle a mix of scheduled European, North African and seasonal long-haul flights. Pre-booked private transfers meet you in arrivals with a name sign, include 60 minutes of free wait time and price the trip as a fixed fare, with no extra for evenings, weekends or luggage.

Common transfer routes

Typical journeys from Nice include:

  • Nice Airport to central Nice hotels, around 20 minutes.
  • Nice Airport to Monaco and Monte Carlo, around 35 to 45 minutes.
  • Nice Airport to Cannes, around 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Nice Port to Nice Airport for a one-way after a cruise, around 25 minutes.
  • Gare Nice Ville to Antibes, Juan-les-Pins or Saint-Tropez for onward stays.

Booking the same operator for return reduces stress on departure day, particularly for early flights from NCE.

Longer excursions often pair the airport pickup with a stop in the Riviera back-country: the perfume town of Grasse (45 minutes from NCE), the medieval village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence (30 minutes) or the Italian border town of Ventimiglia (60 minutes for its Friday market). Operators can quote one-way or split-day transfers with the driver waiting on-site.
