How it works

Private vs shared airport transfer: which one fits your trip

When a private airport transfer is worth it versus a shared shuttle. Pricing, timing, comfort, and the practical trade-offs for solo travellers, families, and groups.

Two cars side by side at airport pickup, a private sedan and a shared shuttle

A private airport transfer collects you, drives directly to your address, and ends. A shared shuttle collects multiple parties heading to nearby destinations, then drops each one in turn. Both have a place. The right choice depends on your group, your budget, and how much you value the time saved by going direct.

This guide breaks the trade-offs down across price, time, comfort, and luggage, with a clear answer for each common scenario.

What private and shared actually mean

Private airport transfer

You and your travellers are the only passengers. The vehicle goes from the airport to your address with no other stops. Driver waits at arrivals with a name board, fixed price set at booking.

Shared airport shuttle

The vehicle is shared with other travellers heading to nearby destinations. The route includes multiple drop-offs in sequence. Lower per-person price; longer total journey time. Driver waits at a designated shuttle pickup zone.

Both options are pre-booked, both have flight tracking, and both run a fixed price set at booking.

Price: when shared wins, when private wins

For a solo traveller heading to a hotel near a major city centre, shared shuttles often come in 30 to 50 percent cheaper per person than the equivalent private fare. That is the strongest case for shared.

The gap closes fast as the group grows:

  • Two travellers: shared still cheaper, but only by 15 to 25 percent
  • Three travellers: roughly level once luggage and timing factor in
  • Four or more: private often equal or cheaper than the combined shared fares

For families with cases and a buggy, the shared per-person fare typically multiplies in a way that makes a private vehicle the practical pick.

Time: how much you save going direct

A shared shuttle stops at multiple drop-offs. Your stop in the route depends on geography; if you are first off, the difference is small. If you are third or fourth, the route can add 30 to 60 minutes to your journey compared with a direct ride.

A private transfer goes airport-to-address. The time is the time the route takes, no detours.

For business travellers, late-night arrivals, or families with tired children, the time saved is often the deciding factor.

Comfort and the journey itself

A private vehicle is yours: bag space, conversation level, and route are decided by you. A shared shuttle carries strangers, has fixed luggage limits per seat, and follows a route that the driver sets to keep everyone moving.

For a long-haul arrival at 23:00, the private option is calmer. For a midday city break, a shared shuttle can be fine and even friendly.

Luggage: what fits in each

Shared shuttles assume one standard case and one hand bag per passenger. Anything larger (bicycles, ski bags, surf gear, oversized work cases) needs to be flagged and may require an upgrade.

Private vehicles match the luggage to the vehicle:

  • Sedan: two cases plus hand luggage
  • Estate: three cases
  • Minivan: four to five cases plus hand luggage
  • Minibus: six cases for groups up to eight

If your trip involves unusual luggage, a private vehicle removes the question entirely. For more on vehicle sizes, see our group vehicle guide.

Which to choose: a quick decision matrix

  • Solo, light luggage, midday arrival, hotel near a major drop-off route: shared works
  • Two travellers, two cases, evening arrival, hotel away from main hubs: private wins on time and cost
  • Family with children, multiple bags, any hour: private; the seat fittings and direct drop are worth it
  • Group of five or more: private minivan or minibus; usually cheaper than combined shared fares
  • Late-night or early-morning flight: private; shared schedules are limited outside main hours
