About Amsterdam Centraal
Amsterdam Centraal opened in 1889 and remains the country’s busiest station, with more than 250,000 passengers a day across domestic and international routes. The building, designed by Pierre Cuijpers (the architect of the Rijksmuseum), sits on three artificial islands in the IJ waterfront. It is the northern anchor of the city’s historic core, with the canal ring fanning south from the front steps.
The station handles Intercity, Sprinter and Intercity Direct services across the Netherlands, plus the Thalys to Paris and Brussels, ICE to Frankfurt and Eurostar to London via Brussels. Schiphol Airport is reachable in 15 to 20 minutes by direct train running every 10 minutes. Metro lines 51, 52, 53 and 54 share the station, along with several tram and bus routes.
Getting from Amsterdam Centraal to Amsterdam
Most of the historic centre is within walking distance, but luggage, weather or accessibility needs make a private transfer the easier choice. The canal-ring hotels in Jordaan, Grachtengordel and De Pijp sit 5 to 15 minutes away by car, depending on traffic and one-way systems around the canals.
The streets immediately around Stationsplein can be congested at school-run and end-of-day peaks, and the canal bridges add minutes when raised for boats. A pre-booked driver knows the working routes and uses the dedicated pickup lane on Stationsplein for loading.
Pickup points
Pickup for private transfers is on Stationsplein, the main square in front of the station’s south (city-side) entrance. Your driver waits at the entrance with a name sign and uses the signposted pickup lane for loading. The IJzijde (north, IJ-facing) side of the station is mainly used for ferries and is not the standard pickup point.
For inter-station moves to Amsterdam Zuid (the main business-district station served by Thalys and Schiphol-bound traffic on certain routes), confirm the station name at booking. Amsterdam Zuid is about 7 km south and 15 to 25 minutes by car.

Booking your Amsterdam Centraal transfer
Pre-booking a transfer from Centraal removes the kerbside scramble at Stationsplein, where the taxi rank can run a 10 to 15 minute queue at peak. The fare is fixed at checkout, free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pickup and the first 60 minutes of waiting are included from your booked time.
Payment is online via Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, iDEAL, Wero or PayPal. For Thalys, Eurostar or ICE arrivals, share the train number at booking so the driver tracks the actual platform time rather than the timetable slot.
