Antalya is the largest city on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, with around 1.43 million residents in the metropolitan area and tens of millions of visitors a year. The old town of Kaleiçi sits above the Roman harbour, ringed by Ottoman-era houses and entered through Hadrian’s Gate from AD 130. To the west, Konyaaltı Beach runs for several kilometres beneath the Bey Mountains, while Lara Beach to the east anchors a long strip of large resort hotels.

Antalya sits at the western end of Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, with the Bey Mountains rising sharply behind the city. The metropolitan area extends along around 80 km of coast, taking in Konyaaltı, Kaleiçi, Lara, Aksu and Belek. Roman remains include the Hadrian’s Gate triple arch, the Hıdırlık Tower and the well-preserved theatre at Aspendos, 50 km east of the centre.

Getting around

Central Antalya works well on foot, with Kaleiçi closed to most through traffic. The Antray tram links Kaleiçi, the museum and the inland districts, and city buses cover Konyaaltı, Lara and the airport. For longer trips along the coast to Kemer, Belek, Side and Alanya the choice is between intercity buses and a private transfer, and most travellers with luggage or families pick the latter for door-to-door simplicity.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October are the most comfortable, with daytime highs of 22 to 30 °C, sea temperatures climbing into the mid-20s and dependable sunshine. July and August see 35 °C and full resorts. Winter is mild on the coast at 12 to 17 °C, but cool and sometimes snowy in the mountains, where day trips to Saklıkent ski centre are possible.

Antalya is a popular winter base for European cyclists and runners thanks to mild January days at 12 to 15 °C. The Antalya Film Festival in early October and the Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival in June and July both add demand on roads to the east of the city, so transfer drivers usually plan extra time on those weekends.

Transferring from Antalya’s airports

Antalya Airport (AYT) is Turkey’s third busiest after Istanbul and Sabiha Gökçen, with two international terminals and a domestic terminal handling huge summer charter traffic from Europe. It is 13 km east of the centre, 30 to 40 km from Belek, 60 to 70 km from Side and around 125 km from Alanya.
