Getting around

Metro line 3 links ATH to Syntagma in 40 minutes, while the X95 express bus runs the same corridor around the clock. Taxis from the rank charge a fixed EUR 40 day rate or EUR 55 night rate to the centre, and a pre-booked transfer fixes the price in advance with a driver waiting inside the terminal.

Best time to visit

April to early June and September to October are the most comfortable months for sightseeing, with 20 to 28 degree afternoons and lower humidity than midsummer. July and August often pass 35 degrees, and many locals leave the city for the islands during the second half of August. Winter is mild by European standards, with January highs near 13 degrees and rare snowfall above the Lycabettus hill.

Transferring from Athens’s airports

Athens is served by a single commercial airport, Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), which opened in 2001 in Spata east of the city. The Attiki Odos motorway links the airport to the wider road network and on to Piraeus, Glyfada and the Athens centre. Cruise passengers often combine ATH arrivals with same-day Piraeus drop-offs, and drivers track flight times so they meet you with a sign even if the inbound is delayed. The 60-minute free wait after landing covers immigration and baggage.
