About Eleftherios Venizelos Athens International Airport
Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (ATH) opened in 2001 and is named after the early 20th-century Greek prime minister. It handled around 28.2 million passengers in 2023, ranking as Greece’s busiest airport, and operates two parallel runways and a single terminal building with two adjacent piers: the main terminal and the satellite terminal connected by an underground link. The airfield sits in Spata, east of Athens, on the Mesogaia plain.
Getting from ATH to Athens
The Attiki Odos motorway runs west from the airport and links to the wider Athens road network, including the A6 toward Glyfada and the coast, and Mesogeion Avenue toward Syntagma. Most transfers into the central districts take 40 to 60 minutes, while Piraeus port and Rafina port are alternative drop-offs for ferry passengers. Pre-booked drivers leave from exit 3 of arrivals on a fixed fare, with the price locked at booking.
Terminals and pickup points
ATH has a main terminal and a satellite terminal joined by an underground walkway with a moving sidewalk. The main terminal handles check-in, baggage reclaim and customs, and all arrivals lead to the same hall regardless of departure gate. Pre-booked drivers wait at exit 3, where the marked meeting point sits opposite the information desk on the public landside concourse. The point is signed in Greek and English.
