About Vienna

Vienna is Austria’s capital and by far its largest city, with just over 2 million residents and around 2.9 million in the wider metropolitan area. For five centuries it was the seat of the Habsburg empire, and that history is written across the Ringstrasse, the 5.3 km boulevard that loops the old town past the State Opera, the Hofburg palace, the parliament and the Burgtheater. Inside the Ring, Stephansdom cathedral, the pedestrianised Graben and the Spanish Riding School at the Hofburg cover most short-stay itineraries.

Beyond the Ring, Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens sit 5 km south-west of the centre, and the Belvedere with Klimt’s Kiss is on the south side. The Prater park, with its Riesenrad Ferris wheel from 1897, marks the eastern edge of the inner districts. Vienna repeatedly tops global liveability rankings, and the public realm shows it, with clean transit, broad pavements and well-kept parks.

Getting around

Vienna’s transit network is comprehensive, with five U-Bahn metro lines, 28 tram routes and a dense bus grid run by Wiener Linien. The U-Bahn runs from around 05:00 to 00:30 on weekdays and through the night on weekends. A single ticket costs EUR 2.40 and a 24 hour pass EUR 6.10, valid across U-Bahn, tram and bus. The S-Bahn suburban network connects Wien Mitte and other inner stations with VIE Airport, with trains every 15 to 30 minutes.

For airport runs with luggage, late arrivals or trips out to the wine villages on the city edge, a pre-booked private transfer is more comfortable and predictable than the train plus taxi handover. Drivers know the Ringstrasse one-way system and can drop directly at hotel entrances inside the pedestrian zone where allowed.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October give the most comfortable weather, with highs of 18 to 26 degrees and lower midsummer crowds. July and August can climb above 30 degrees and many concert programmes pause. November to early March is cold, with regular sub-zero nights and a strong run of Christmas markets across central squares from mid-November to Christmas Eve.

The Vienna Ball season runs from the New Year’s Eve Imperial Ball to early February, with the Opera Ball as the headline event. The Vienna Marathon in April and the Donauinselfest in late June are the largest single events on the calendar.

Transferring from Vienna’s airports

Vienna International at Schwechat (VIE) is the only commercial airport serving the city, with one passenger complex covering Terminals 1, 1A, 2 and 3. Pre-booked private transfers meet you in arrivals with a name sign and a fixed price, with 60 minutes of free waiting time and flight tracking built in. Bratislava Airport (BTS) across the border, 50 km east of Vienna, is sometimes used by low-cost carriers and is around an hour by road.

For cross-border transfers, drivers handle the route to Bratislava, Budapest, Brno or Prague in a single fixed-price booking, which can be more straightforward than connecting through trains with heavy luggage.
