About Cancún
Cancún sits on Mexico’s Caribbean coast in the state of Quintana Roo, with around 900,000 residents in the city. It anchors the Riviera Maya, a coastal corridor running south through Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is a narrow barrier island connecting to the mainland via Boulevard Kukulcán, lined with beachfront resorts. Downtown Cancún (El Centro), inland from the lagoon, holds most of the local commercial activity. Puerto Juárez, 5 km north of downtown, runs ferries to Isla Mujeres.
Cancún International Airport (CUN) is Mexico’s second-busiest, handling more than 30 million passengers a year, the majority of them international.
Getting around
Within the Hotel Zone, hotel shuttles and the R-1 public bus cover most short trips. Between the airport, the cruise terminals, and the wider Riviera Maya, a private transfer is the practical option. Taxis at CUN do not use meters, and rideshare access has historically been restricted around the airport. A pre-booked transfer with a fixed price and a meet-and-greet sign avoids the negotiation at the kerb.
Drivers operate licensed local vehicles and follow the official terminal pickup rules at CUN Terminals 2, 3, and 4.
Best time to visit
December to April is the dry season: daytime highs of 27–30°C, low humidity, and clear skies. This is also the busiest stretch for international arrivals, particularly during US and Canadian school holidays in February and March. May and June are still warm and quieter. July to October is the hurricane season, with peak Atlantic risk in August and September, though most days remain sunny between storm windows.
Transfers run year-round, with flight tracking adjusting automatically when storms reroute or delay arrivals into CUN.
Transferring from Cancún’s airports
CUN is the only commercial airport serving the city. It sits 22 km south of the Hotel Zone, with terminal-specific pickup points across its four terminals. Drive time to Hotel Zone resorts averages 25–35 minutes. Downtown Cancún is closer at 16 km, around 20–25 minutes. Puerto Juárez ferry terminal is 25 km from CUN, about 30 minutes.
For Riviera Maya travel, Playa del Carmen is 55 km south (50 minutes) and Tulum is 120 km south (90–110 minutes). All pre-booked routes include flight tracking, meet-and-greet, 60 minutes free wait, and tolls.
