About Cancun International Airport

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is Mexico’s second-busiest airport after Mexico City, handling more than 30 million passengers a year. It sits 22 km south of Cancún’s Hotel Zone, with four active terminals served by major US, Canadian, European, and Latin American carriers, plus full domestic coverage. The airport is the primary entry point for the Riviera Maya - including Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Cozumel ferry connection.

CUN’s modern terminal infrastructure handles peak Saturday arrivals well, but the taxi and rideshare situation outside the customs hall has historically been chaotic, with non-metered taxis and aggressive timeshare touts. Pre-booked private transfers bypass that entirely with a name-sign pickup inside the official transfer area.

Getting from CUN to Cancún

The standard route to the Hotel Zone runs north on the Cancún–Playa del Carmen federal highway and east along Boulevard Kukulcán. Drive time averages 25–35 minutes. Downtown Cancún (El Centro), inland from the lagoon, is closer at 16 km, around 20–25 minutes. Puerto Juárez ferry terminal is 25 km from CUN, about 30 minutes.

Southbound, the highway runs straight through the Riviera Maya. Playa del Carmen is 55 km (50 minutes), Akumal 100 km (85 minutes), Tulum 120 km (90–110 minutes).

Terminals and pickup points

CUN operates four terminals:

  • Terminal 2 - mainly domestic and some Caribbean flights
  • Terminal 3 - US, Canadian, and some European arrivals
  • Terminal 4 - the newest, handling high-volume international routes

Pre-booked drivers meet inside the arrivals hall at the official transfer area after customs, holding a name sign. The driver then walks passengers to the designated pickup zone outside the terminal - separate from the taxi rank and timeshare areas.
