About Doha

Doha is the capital of Qatar and home to roughly 2.4 million residents, around 80 percent of the country’s population. The Corniche curves seven kilometres along the bay, framing the skyscrapers of West Bay, the dhow harbour and I. M. Pei’s Museum of Islamic Art. Visitors come for the restored Souq Waqif, the National Museum of Qatar designed by Jean Nouvel, the Pearl-Qatar island development and the Education City cultural campus. Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken and the currency is the Qatari riyal, pegged at 3.64 to the US dollar. The 2022 FIFA World Cup left a legacy of polished infrastructure, including the driverless metro, the Lusail planned city north of the centre and a clutch of new museums and hotels.

Getting around

The driverless Doha Metro opened in 2019 and now runs Red, Green and Gold lines linking Hamad International with the Corniche, Msheireb interchange and Education City. A standard ride costs 2 QAR. Karwa taxis are metered and inexpensive, and ride-hailing through Uber or Careem is available. Distances inside the city are modest, but the heat from May to September makes walking impractical for most of the day, so private cars remain the comfortable option. Friday morning is the quietest time on the roads. A network of free metrolink shuttle buses runs from metro stations to nearby districts and souqs, useful for short last-mile hops without the heat exposure.

Best time to visit

November to March is the prime window, with daytime highs of 22 to 28 degrees and cool evenings ideal for the Corniche and outdoor cafes. December hosts the Qatar International Food Festival, and the National Day on 18 December brings parades along the bay. April and October are warm transitional months. From June to August temperatures push past 40 degrees and humidity climbs, though indoor attractions, the metro and souq remain busy. Ramadan brings shorter daytime trading and late-night iftar gatherings, with many restaurants only fully reopening after sunset. The Qatar Open tennis tournament in February and the Doha Tribeca Film Festival in November are useful pegs for travel planning.

Transferring from Doha’s airports

Doha is served by a single passenger airport, Hamad International (DOH), opened in 2014 and consistently rated among the world’s best. It sits 15 km east of the centre and is the hub for Qatar Airways’ global network to nearly 200 destinations. Cruise traffic docks at Doha Port on the Corniche, just steps from the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif. Pre-booked private transfers cover both with fixed pricing, flight or vessel tracking and a 60-minute free wait window. Qatar does not charge road tolls, so the fare you see at booking is the fare you pay, with no airport surcharge on arrival.

Common transfer routes

The most-booked rides from DOH run to West Bay, The Pearl, Msheireb and Lusail, taking 20 to 35 minutes depending on traffic and destination. Transfers to Education City and Aspire Zone add a few minutes. From Doha Port, popular routes lead to the airport for onward flights, to luxury resorts at Banana Island ferry terminal, or to Al Wakra and the desert at Khor Al Adaid for day trips. Cross-border transfers to Saudi Arabia from the southern Salwa crossing and to Bahrain are possible but require checks in advance, since visa policy and vehicle permits differ.

Booking your Doha transfer

Pre-booking takes a couple of minutes. Enter flight or vessel details, pick your vehicle from saloon up to minivan and confirm. The fare is fixed with no airport surcharges, your driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign and waits up to 60 minutes free if you are delayed. Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, iDEAL, Wero and Alipay are all accepted, and free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pickup. Child seats can be requested at checkout and porter assistance is available at Hamad International for passengers with multiple bags or reduced mobility.
