About Hamad International Airport
Hamad International (DOH) is Qatar’s only international passenger airport, opened in 2014 to replace the older Doha International. It serves as the hub for Qatar Airways and currently handles around 50 million passengers a year through a single integrated terminal often ranked among the world’s best by Skytrax. The terminal centres on the Orchard, a 10,000-square-metre indoor garden, alongside an art programme that includes Lamp Bear, the giant yellow sculpture by Urs Fischer that meets you in the duty-free hall. Concourse expansion continues with new piers added in recent years to support 2022 World Cup demand, and the airport now offers more than 70 retail and dining outlets across landside and airside.
Getting from DOH to Doha
DOH sits 15 km southeast of central Doha and 18 km from West Bay. The G-Ring Road and the Doha Expressway link the airport with the city, and a private transfer takes 20 to 30 minutes outside rush hour. The Doha Metro Red Line runs directly from the airport metro station with stops at Msheireb interchange, Corniche, West Bay and Lusail. Karwa taxis are metered and inexpensive but can involve a queue at peak times. The roads are well surfaced and routes well signposted. A complimentary metrolink shuttle bus runs from Msheireb to most central districts and Souq Waqif if your hotel is not within walking distance of a metro station.
Terminals and pickup points
DOH operates a single integrated terminal, with arrivals on the lower level and departures above. After clearing immigration and baggage, follow signs to the Premium Meet and Greet area opposite the information desk on Arrivals, where the driver waits with a name sign. Vehicles are parked in the dedicated short-stay zone immediately adjacent and a porter service can be requested at booking. Lifts and ramps make the route from arrivals to the car park accessible, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles can be specified in the booking notes for passengers with reduced mobility.
Common transfer routes from DOH
The most-booked rides run to West Bay, The Pearl, Msheireb and Lusail, taking 20 to 35 minutes depending on destination. Transfers to Education City and Aspire Zone add a few minutes. Day trips to Al Wakrah for the souq or to the inland sea at Khor Al Adaid via Mesaieed take 45 to 90 minutes. Cruise passengers disembarking at Doha Port often book a transfer back to DOH for onward flights. Hire-car alternatives exist but driving rules in Qatar require an International Driving Permit for some nationalities, which makes a pre-booked transfer the simpler choice for short stays.
Booking your DOH transfer
Pre-booking a private transfer from Hamad International takes about two minutes. Enter your flight number, pickup point and party size, then choose from saloon, SUV, minivan or minibus. The fare is fixed with no airport surcharges, the driver tracks your flight with a 60-minute free wait, and free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pickup. Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, iDEAL, Wero and Alipay are accepted at checkout. Child seats can be added for a small fee and night arrivals after midnight are covered at the same fixed fare with no late surcharge.
