About Frankfurt am Main Airport
Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA) is Germany’s largest airport and Europe’s fourth-busiest by passenger numbers, handling about 59 million people in 2023. It sits in the Frankfurter Stadtwald forest 12 km south-west of the city, with four runways arranged in two pairs and a long history as Lufthansa’s main hub. The site dates to 1936 and the modern Terminal 1 opened in 1972, with Terminal 2 following in 1994 to take additional long-haul and non-Lufthansa traffic.
Getting from Frankfurt am Main Airport to Frankfurt
The A5 motorway runs along the eastern edge of the airport, feeding the A648 spur into the city centre and the wider Rhine-Main road grid. Frankfurt city centre is 14 km away with a 20 to 35-minute transfer, while Messe Frankfurt is 9 km north on the same A5. Pre-booked drivers leave directly from the named meeting point inside arrivals, with no taxi rank queue, and the fare is fixed regardless of traffic on the day.
Terminals and pickup points
Terminal 1 has three concourses (A, B, Z) and serves Lufthansa and most Star Alliance carriers. Terminal 2 hosts concourses D and E and handles Oneworld, SkyTeam and many low-cost airlines. Drivers wait inside whichever terminal matches the arriving flight, at the meeting point in the public arrivals hall, holding a name sign. The SkyLine people-mover links the two terminals airside and there is a shuttle bus landside for travellers connecting between them.
