About Istanbul

Straddling the Bosphorus, Istanbul is the only city in the world that sits on two continents. Around 15.8 million residents share narrow lanes in Sultanahmet, the modern grid of Sisli and the residential sprawl of Kadikoy on the Asian side. Visitors come for the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar’s 4,000 shops and the ferries that crisscross the strait between Europe and Asia. The currency is the Turkish lira and Turkish is the working language, though English is widely understood in hotels and the main tourist quarters. The city has served as the capital of three empires, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, and that depth of history is layered into the underground cisterns of the old town, the Theodosian land walls and the palaces along the strait. A typical first visit covers the historic peninsula, a Bosphorus cruise to Ortakoy or Anadolu Kavagi, and an evening in the cafes of Karakoy or Cihangir.

Getting around

Istanbul’s public network is dense and good value. The M1, M2, M7 and M11 metro lines link the airports with the centre, the historic T1 tram runs through Sultanahmet, and Bosphorus ferries are an experience in themselves. An Istanbulkart smart card unlocks every mode of transport for a few lira per ride and is sold from machines at the airport on arrival. That said, taxis remain the fastest door-to-door option, particularly with luggage, and ride-share apps cover the city. Traffic between the European and Asian sides peaks around the Fatih Sultan Mehmet and 15 July Martyrs bridges, so allow extra time during weekday rush hours. The Marmaray rail tunnel under the Bosphorus is a useful way to cross from Sirkeci to Uskudar in four minutes when bridge traffic is heavy.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October offer the most comfortable weather, with daytime highs of 18 to 26 degrees and lower crowds than the July peak. Summers are hot and humid, climbing past 30 degrees, while winters are damp and chilly with occasional snow. Tulip season in early April fills Emirgan Park and Gulhane with millions of blooms in what is a major civic festival. Ramadan and the two Bayram holidays shift each year on the lunar calendar and bring lively iftar markets along with busier mosque schedules. The Istanbul Music Festival runs through June and the Istanbul Biennial returns every two years in autumn, both worth tying a trip around.

Transferring from Istanbul’s airports

Istanbul has two main commercial airports. New Istanbul Airport (IST), opened in 2019, sits roughly 40 km north of the centre near the Black Sea and handles Turkish Airlines and most long-haul traffic. Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) lies 35 km southeast on the Asian side and is the base for Pegasus and AnadoluJet. Cruise passengers dock at Galataport, the redeveloped Karakoy terminal that reopened in 2021 with direct access to Beyoglu. Pre-booked private transfers cover all three with fixed pricing, flight or vessel tracking and a 60-minute free wait. The fare is settled online in advance, which avoids the queue at the official taxi rank and the variable surcharges that can apply at peak times.

Common transfer routes

The most-booked routes from IST run to Sultanahmet, Taksim and Besiktas, typically 50 to 70 minutes depending on traffic. From SAW, journeys to Kadikoy take around 35 minutes, while crossing to Sultanahmet via the Eurasia Tunnel adds another 20 to 30 minutes. Galataport sits walking distance from Karakoy and Galata Tower, but transfers to hotels in Sultanahmet, Sisli or out to either airport are popular with cruise passengers heading on after the call. Day excursions to Sapanca Lake or Bursa via the Osmangazi bridge also start at the airport for visitors heading inland straight from arrivals.

Booking your Istanbul transfer

Booking a private transfer with Taxi2Airport takes a couple of minutes. Choose your pickup point, enter flight or ship details and pick the vehicle that suits your group, from saloon up to minivan and minibus. The fare you see is the fare you pay, with no airport surcharges added on arrival. Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, iDEAL, Wero and Alipay are all accepted, and free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pickup. Child seats can be requested at checkout for a small fee, and a porter service is available at IST and SAW for passengers with multiple bags or reduced mobility.
