Istanbul Airport (IST) opened in stages from 2018 and replaced the older Ataturk Airport as Turkey’s main international gateway. It now ranks as the world’s seventh busiest, handling around 80 million passengers a year and serving as the hub for Turkish Airlines’ global network to more than 340 destinations. The single integrated terminal is one of the largest under one roof anywhere, with six concourses radiating from a central marketplace. Facilities include a Yotel transit hotel, lounges for every alliance and Turkey’s largest duty-free hall. Long-term plans take capacity to 200 million passengers a year across additional runways and terminal expansions.

Getting from IST to Istanbul

IST sits roughly 40 km north of Taksim Square, close to the Black Sea coast and well outside the old city. The Northern Marmara Motorway connects the airport with the centre via the Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge for Anatolian-side destinations or the coastal road for Sultanahmet and Beyoglu. Outside rush hour the drive is around 55 minutes, climbing to 80 to 90 minutes between 07:30 and 10:00 or 16:30 and 20:00 on weekdays. The M11 metro reaches Gayrettepe in 35 minutes and the Havaist airport bus runs to several city districts. The Marmaray rail tunnel onwards from Gayrettepe is a useful option to cross to the Asian side without sitting in bridge traffic.

Terminals and pickup points

IST operates a single terminal with arrivals on the lower level and departures above. After clearing immigration and baggage, follow signs to the Meeting Point on Arrivals, where pre-booked drivers wait with a name sign opposite the information desk. The transfer vehicle is parked in the dedicated short-stay area a short walk from the meeting point, and a porter can be requested at booking if needed. Mobility assistance from the gate to the car park can also be arranged in advance through the airline and confirmed on the booking notes for the driver.

Common transfer routes from IST

The most-booked rides run to Sultanahmet for the historic peninsula, Taksim and Beyoglu for the nightlife district, and Besiktas, Sisli or Levent for business stays. Onward transfers to Sabiha Gokcen for connecting flights take around 90 minutes via the Eurasia Tunnel. Cruise passengers heading to Galataport reach the terminal in around an hour. Day-trip pickups to Sapanca Lake or Bursa via the Osmangazi bridge are also popular, with Bursa around two and a half hours via the suspension bridge across the Gulf of Izmit. Longer rides to the Black Sea villages of Sile and Agva take about 90 minutes.
