About Galataport

Galataport is Istanbul’s modern cruise terminal, opened in October 2021 along a 1.2 km stretch of Bosphorus waterfront in the historic Karakoy district. The site replaces the old Salipazari terminal and was the world’s first cruise port to use a fully underground border-control area, freeing the surface for restaurants, museums and pedestrian promenades. The Istanbul Modern art museum, designed by Renzo Piano, sits within the complex, and Galata Tower is a 10-minute walk uphill. The terminal can berth three ships simultaneously and serves Mediterranean and Black Sea itineraries, with Holland America, MSC, Princess and Oceania among the regular callers. The complex also houses retail and restaurant frontage that stays open to the public year-round.

Getting from Galataport to Istanbul

Galataport is effectively in central Istanbul. The Galata Bridge crosses to Sultanahmet in 10 minutes by car, while Taksim Square is 15 minutes uphill through Beyoglu. The T1 tram passes the Karakoy stop on the doorstep of the terminal, and Tophane metro station is a short walk for connections to Sisli and Levent. Outside peak hours a private transfer from Galataport to most central hotels takes 10 to 20 minutes, and the fare is fixed in advance with no port surcharges. The Bosphorus ferry pier at Karakoy is a few minutes’ walk and offers scenic commutes across to Kadikoy and Uskudar on the Asian side for a few lira.

Berths and pickup points

The terminal has three main berths along the waterfront, with the underground border control consolidating all arrivals into the central Galataport plaza. Pre-booked drivers wait at the main entrance on Kemankes Caddesi in front of the terminal building, holding a name sign. Vehicle access points are clearly marked and the short walk from arrivals to the car is barrier-free, which helps with the heavier luggage cruise travellers tend to bring. Porter assistance can be requested at booking and any specific meeting instruction, such as a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, should be added to the booking notes in advance.

Common transfer routes from Galataport

Most cruise passengers book transfers either to a city hotel for a pre or post-cruise stay or to one of the airports for onward flights. The popular routes are Galataport to Sultanahmet, Taksim and Besiktas for hotel stays, and Galataport to Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) for departures. A scenic Bosphorus loop with stops at Ortakoy and Bebek is also a frequent booking for ship calls of just one day in port. Longer day trips to Edirne for the Selimiye Mosque or to Sile and Agva on the Black Sea coast can be added as a fixed-fare full-day charter for groups.

Booking your Galataport transfer

Booking a private transfer from Galataport takes about two minutes. Enter ship name, expected disembarkation time and party size, then choose the right vehicle for your luggage. The fare is fixed and includes tolls, vessel tracking is built in and the 60-minute free wait starts once you can disembark. Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, iDEAL, Wero and Alipay are accepted, and free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pickup. Child seats and porter assistance can be added at checkout, and the driver’s mobile contact details arrive by email and SMS once the booking is confirmed.
