About Miami International Airport

Miami International Airport (MIA) handles more than 50 million passengers a year, ranking as the United States’ busiest gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean. It sits 12 km northwest of downtown Miami, with three terminal concourses - North (American Airlines), Central, and South (international carriers) - connected by the MIA Mover automated people mover to the Miami Intermodal Center for rental cars and onward rail.

The airport is the primary departure point for cruise passengers heading to PortMiami, and a regular connecting hub for travellers continuing to the Keys, Fort Lauderdale, or the Riviera Maya.

Getting from MIA to Miami

The most-used route to downtown Miami runs via SR-836 (Dolphin Expressway), with a typical 20–25 minute drive. To South Beach, the route continues across the Julia Tuttle or MacArthur Causeway - 17 km, 25–35 minutes outside peak. Brickell and Coral Gables sit 15 km and 10 km from MIA respectively, both reachable in 20–30 minutes.

PortMiami sits 13 km east, 20–30 minutes via the Port Boulevard tunnel and bridge.

Terminals and pickup points

MIA operates three terminal concourses on a single connected airside:

  • North Terminal - American Airlines and oneworld partners
  • Central Terminal - Delta, Air France, KLM, LATAM, and other international carriers
  • South Terminal - Lufthansa, British Airways, Iberia, and additional long-haul international carriers

Drivers stage at the kerbside arrivals area on Level 1 corresponding to your inbound terminal and meet you inside the arrivals hall with a name sign.
