About Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal
The Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT) is Sydney’s primary cruise terminal, located on the western side of Circular Quay between the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. The terminal handles ships up to roughly 300 metres in length and 50 metres in air draft, with anything larger directed to White Bay Cruise Terminal further west.
The OPT is one of the most scenic ports of call in the world, with ships docking metres from the Rocks heritage precinct, a 5-minute walk from the CBD financial district and 10 minutes from the Royal Botanic Garden. Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, P&O Australia, Celebrity and Cunard all use the terminal during the November to April Australian cruise season.
Getting from Sydney Port to Sydney
The OPT sits inside the CBD, so most city hotels are within a 5-minute drive or a 15-minute walk. Sydney Airport is 12 km south, a 25-minute drive via the Cahill Expressway and Eastern Distributor outside peak. The Harbour Tunnel toll is included in the fixed pre-booked fare, as is the airport access fee on the return leg.
For travellers heading further afield, Bondi Beach is roughly 20 minutes east, Manly via the Harbour Bridge is around 35 minutes north, and the Blue Mountains are about 100 minutes west. The Hunter Valley wine country is a 2-hour drive north.
Berths and pickup points
The Overseas Passenger Terminal has two berths along its 350-metre wharf, both served by the same arrivals concourse on the upper level. Pickup happens on the forecourt outside the customs hall on the western (Hickson Road) side of the building, where private vehicles use the signed pickup bays.
Drivers meet passengers as they exit the customs hall holding a name sign. The first 60 minutes after scheduled disembarkation are included free, which absorbs the typical 30 to 45 minutes of queuing for biosecurity and customs on a turnaround day.
