About Tokyo

Tokyo is the capital of Japan and the largest metropolitan area on earth, with around 13.9 million people in the prefecture and roughly 37 million in the wider Greater Tokyo area. Visitors come for the neon canyons of Shinjuku and Shibuya, the temples of Asakusa, the gardens of the Imperial Palace, the fashion of Harajuku and the food of Ginza and Tsukiji. The currency is the Japanese yen and Japanese is the working language, though English signage is good on trains, in major stations and at most hotels. The city sprawls across 23 special wards on the Kanto plain, with the Sumida River separating the older shitamachi districts in the east from the newer commercial centres of Marunouchi and Roppongi. A first visit typically combines a few days of urban sightseeing with a Shinkansen day trip to Kyoto, Hakone or Nikko.

Getting around

Tokyo’s rail network is famously efficient. The JR Yamanote loop, the Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines connect almost everywhere, and Suica or Pasmo IC cards work across operators. Trains run from around 05:00 to 00:30 and stop overnight, which makes late arrivals a private-transfer market. Taxis are plentiful, immaculate and metered, with a base fare of around 500 yen, though long distances climb quickly. Private transfers come into their own for airport runs, late arrivals, group travel and trips with heavy luggage where a Shinkansen connection follows. The Tokyo Monorail at Haneda, the Yurikamome line to Odaiba and the Narita Express to NRT all offer good rail alternatives, but require lifting bags at busy stations.

Best time to visit

Late March to early May is peak season for sakura cherry blossom, followed by warm late spring weather. October and November bring crisp days and the koyo autumn-leaf season around Mount Takao and the Imperial gardens. Summer from June to early September is hot, humid and includes the Tsuyu rainy season. Winters are dry and cold but generally snow-free in central Tokyo. Golden Week in late April and early May, and the Obon period in mid-August, see domestic travel peak, with hotel rates rising and Shinkansen trains close to full. The Sanja Matsuri at Asakusa in May and the Sumida River fireworks in late July are useful events to anchor a trip around.

Transferring from Tokyo’s airports

Tokyo has two main airports. Haneda (HND), 14 km south of the centre on Tokyo Bay, handles most domestic flights and a growing share of international services. Narita (NRT), 60 km east in Chiba prefecture, remains the primary long-haul international gateway. Cruise traffic docks at Tokyo International Cruise Terminal on Aomi pier in Odaiba, opened in 2020 to replace the older Harumi pier. Pre-booked private transfers cover all three with fixed pricing and flight or vessel tracking. The fare includes Shuto and Bayshore Route expressway tolls, which removes the need to estimate or settle them on the ride.

Common transfer routes

From Haneda the most-booked rides run to Ginza, Shinjuku, Shibuya and Roppongi, typically 25 to 45 minutes. From Narita, transfers to central Tokyo take 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, with Disneyland Resort at Maihama a popular shorter run of around 50 minutes. The Tokyo International Cruise Terminal sits 20 minutes from Ginza and 40 minutes from Haneda, making post-cruise airport connections straightforward. Onward transfers to Yokohama, Hakone and Nikko are also common, with Yokohama 30 to 50 minutes from Haneda and Hakone around 90 to 120 minutes depending on traffic on the Tomei Expressway.

Booking your Tokyo transfer

Pre-booking is quick. Enter flight or vessel details, pick a saloon, minivan or minibus depending on luggage and group size, and confirm. The fare is fixed and includes motorway tolls, with no airport surcharges added on arrival. Drivers meet you in arrivals with a name sign and wait up to 60 minutes free of charge. Cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, iDEAL, Wero and Alipay are accepted, and free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pickup. Child seats can be requested at checkout for a small fee, and oversized luggage such as ski bags can be flagged in the booking notes so the right vehicle is dispatched.
