About Barcelona

Barcelona is Catalonia’s capital and Spain’s second-largest city, with about 1.66 million residents inside the city limits and around 5.5 million across the metropolitan area. It sits on the Mediterranean between the Collserola hills and the sea, which makes the layout unusually legible: the gridded Eixample district stretches inland from the medieval Gothic Quarter and the waterfront, with Montjuïc rising to the south.

Visitors come for Gaudí’s Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló, the tapas bars of El Born and the Boqueria market on La Rambla, and the beaches at Barceloneta and Bogatell. The Port of Barcelona is the busiest cruise port in Europe, handling more than 3 million passengers a year, while Barcelona-El Prat moved roughly 55 million passengers in 2024.

Getting around

The TMB metro covers the city well, with eight lines and trains every 3 to 5 minutes at peak. A T-casual ten-trip ticket is the standard local pass. Buses fill in the coastal and uphill gaps, and the city has built out a dense cycle lane network in recent years.

Taxis are easy to flag on the street, but airport, port and station runs are where pricing varies most. A pre-booked private transfer locks the fare at checkout and removes the language barrier at the kerb, which is useful at El Prat T1 where the taxi queue can stretch past 20 minutes during cruise turnaround days.

Best time to visit

May and June give the best balance: 22–27°C, long daylight, the beaches open but not yet packed, and the Primavera Sound festival in early June. Late September into October is the other strong window, with the Mercè festival on 24 September and sea temperatures still around 22°C.

July and August are hot (28–30°C) and crowded, with major museum queues often exceeding 60 minutes without timed tickets. December to February is mild by European standards (10–15°C) and quiet, with shorter days but a noticeably lower transfer demand.

Transferring from Barcelona’s airports

Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) is the main gateway, 14 km from the centre via the C-32 and Ronda Litoral. T1 handles most international long-haul and the major full-service carriers, while T2 (split into T2A, T2B and T2C) handles most low-cost traffic, including a large share of Vueling, Ryanair and easyJet routes. Drive times of 25 to 40 minutes apply to both terminals; T2 sits about 4 km closer to the city but the road layout evens out.

Girona-Costa Brava (GRO), roughly 100 km north, and Reus (REU), roughly 110 km south-west, occasionally handle budget routings. Transfers from either typically run 75 to 90 minutes to central Barcelona on the AP-7.

Booking your Barcelona transfer

A pre-booked Barcelona transfer is the simplest way to avoid the BCN taxi queue and the variable metered fare that comes with traffic on the Ronda Litoral. With Taxi2Airport, the price quoted is the price charged: no airport pickup fee, no extra for two or more bags, no surcharge for cruise port pickups even during the busy weekend turnarounds at Moll Adossat.

Flight tracking is built in, the first 60 minutes of waiting are free and your driver carries a name sign at the terminal exit. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before pickup and payment is handled online via Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, iDEAL, Wero or PayPal, so you arrive with one less thing to sort out.
