About Copenhagen
Copenhagen is Denmark’s capital and the largest city in Scandinavia by metropolitan area, with roughly 660,000 residents in the municipality and around 1.4 million across greater Copenhagen. It sits on the eastern coast of Zealand, looking across the Øresund strait towards Malmö in Sweden. The city blends royal palaces, harbour-front warehouses converted into restaurants, and one of the densest cycling networks in the world.
Visitors come for the design museums, the Tivoli Gardens, the new harbour swimming pools and a food scene anchored by world-renowned New Nordic kitchens. The compact centre means most landmarks sit within a 30-minute walk of Rådhuspladsen.
Getting around
Copenhagen runs on bikes. More than 60 percent of residents cycle to work or school, and rental bikes are easy to find at the airport and major stations. The metro runs 24 hours a day across four lines, connecting the airport, the central station and the Nordhavn waterfront. Buses, S-trains and harbour ferries fill in the gaps.
For airport arrivals, a pre-booked private transfer is the simplest option when you are carrying luggage, travelling as a family, or arriving on a late flight. Drivers track the flight and wait without extra cost during normal delays.
Best time to visit
May to September is the warmest stretch, with daylight running past 10pm in midsummer and outdoor harbour bathing at Islands Brygge and Kastrup Sea Bath. June and August are the busiest tourism months and hotel rates climb accordingly. April and October are quieter shoulder periods with cool but pleasant weather. November to February brings short days, Christmas markets at Tivoli and Nyhavn, and frequent rain, so a warm, weatherproof transfer at arrival is welcome.
Transferring from Copenhagen’s airports
Copenhagen Airport (CPH Kastrup) is the only commercial airport serving the city and the busiest hub in Scandinavia, handling more than 30 million passengers in recent years. It sits 8 km from the city centre on the island of Amager, with terminals 2 and 3 used for almost all scheduled flights. A pre-booked taxi from CPH to a central hotel typically takes 20 minutes by road.
Some travellers connecting via southern Sweden also use Malmö Airport (MMX) about 60 km away, or fly into Billund (BLL) on Jutland and continue by road, which is closer to a three-hour drive.
