About Milan
Milan is Italy’s second largest city and the engine room of its economy, home to the stock exchange, Italy’s biggest banks and the design quarter that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each Salone del Mobile in April. The historic centre fans out from the marble Duomo, with the glass-roofed Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, La Scala opera house and Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie all within walking distance. Beyond the centre, the Navigli canals, the Brera art quarter and the modern Porta Nuova skyline give Milan a layered character that rewards more than a weekend visit.
With around 1.4 million residents in the city and roughly 3.3 million across the metropolitan area, Milan is also a major gateway for the Italian lakes, the Alps and the Po Valley. Most international travellers arrive through one of three airports, and the choice of airport often shapes how the trip begins.
Getting around
Inside the historic core, walking is the most enjoyable way to move between sights, since distances rarely exceed 20 minutes on foot. The ATM metro runs five lines from roughly 05:40 to 00:30 and is the quickest way to cross the city, while trams and buses fill in the gaps. A 24 hour transit ticket costs around EUR 7.60 and covers the metro, trams and city buses.
For airport runs, late evening flights or trips with luggage, a pre-booked private transfer removes the hassle of dragging suitcases on metro stairs or queueing for a taxi rank outside the terminal. Driving yourself inside Area C, the central congestion charge zone, costs EUR 7.50 per entry on weekdays, so most visitors leave the car for day trips outside the ring road.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months, with daytime highs between 18 and 26 degrees and lower humidity than midsummer. July and August can climb above 32 degrees, and many independent shops and trattorias close for the second half of August. December brings the Oh Bej Oh Bej Christmas market around Castello Sforzesco and the start of the opera season at La Scala on the seventh of the month.
If your trip is built around fashion or design, Milan Fashion Week runs in February and September and Salone del Mobile in mid-April, when hotel rates roughly double and transfers should be booked well in advance.
Transferring from Milan’s airports
Malpensa (MXP) handles long-haul and most intercontinental flights, sitting 49 km north-west of the city. Linate (LIN) is the convenience airport for short-haul European routes, just 7 km from the Duomo. Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY), 45 km north-east, is the main low-cost base and is often labelled “Milan Bergamo” by carriers such as Ryanair and Wizz Air.
Pre-booked private transfers serve all three with a fixed price, flight tracking and a meet-and-greet driver holding a name sign in arrivals. You also get 60 minutes of free waiting time after landing, which covers passport control and baggage queues at MXP without extra charges.
