About Milano Malpensa Airport
Milano Malpensa (MXP) is the largest airport in northern Italy and the main long-haul gateway to Lombardy. It sits 52 km north-west of central Milan in the comune of Ferno, with two passenger terminals connected by a free shuttle bus. Annual passenger traffic runs at roughly 28 million, with intercontinental routes operated by carriers including Emirates, ITA Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta and United, plus a heavy short-haul programme by easyJet from Terminal 2.
Terminal 1 handles Schengen and international flights and is the larger building, with three satellite piers labelled 1A, 1B and 1C. Terminal 2 is around 1 km north and is used by easyJet plus a small number of charter operators. Both terminals connect to the Malpensa Express train to Cadorna and Centrale, with journey times of roughly 40 minutes to Cadorna.
Getting from Milano Malpensa to Milan
The fastest way into central Milan with luggage is a pre-booked private transfer along the A8 Autostrada dei Laghi, with a typical run of 50 to 70 minutes door to door. The Malpensa Express train is a useful alternative if your hotel is near Cadorna or Centrale, with departures every 15 to 30 minutes from 05:00 to 23:30, but it adds a luggage walk at the city end. Coach services to Milano Centrale take 50 to 75 minutes depending on traffic.
Private transfers are also the most efficient option for early morning departures, late landings and groups with multiple bags. The driver tracks your flight, meets you in arrivals with a name sign and drops at the hotel entrance, avoiding the metro stairs.
Terminals and pickup points
For arrivals, walk out of baggage reclaim into the arrivals hall. At Terminal 1 the meeting area is near the central information desk on the ground floor, and at Terminal 2 it is by the main exit doors on the ground level. The driver holds a name sign at the agreed meeting point and walks you to the vehicle in the dedicated short-stay pickup area.
For departures, drop-off is at the kerbside on the departures level at each terminal, with a few minutes allowed for unloading luggage. The driver confirms the terminal in advance based on the airline shown on your booking.
