About Oslo
Oslo is the capital of Norway and the country’s largest city, with around 710,000 residents in the municipality and about 1.1 million in the wider region. It sits at the head of the Oslofjord, framed by forested ridges that locals reach by metro for hiking and skiing in under 30 minutes from the city centre.
The waterfront has transformed over the past two decades, with the Opera House, the Munch Museum and the Aker Brygge promenade replacing former industrial wharves. Visitors come for Viking history, the Fram polar exploration ship, and easy access to the fjords.
Getting around
Oslo runs an integrated network of metro (T-bane), trams, buses, commuter trains and ferries. A single Ruter ticket covers all of them within the city zones. The metro reaches the foot of the Holmenkollen ski jump in about 25 minutes, which makes a winter morning on skis feasible before lunch.
For airport arrivals, a pre-booked private transfer is the most predictable option when you have luggage, travel with children, or arrive late at night when public transport thins out.
Best time to visit
May to September is the warmest and brightest stretch, with the midnight sun lighting the sky until past 10pm in June. July and early August are the busiest months, when locals take their summer holidays and the fjords are at their best. Winter from December to March is cold but offers world-class cross-country skiing inside the city limits at Holmenkollen and Frognerseteren. Shoulder months in April and October are quieter and cheaper, with crisp weather suited to museum-heavy itineraries.
Transferring from Oslo’s airports
Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL) is the main hub, 47 km north of the city. It handles almost all scheduled domestic, European and intercontinental flights, with a typical drive of 45 minutes to the centre via the E6 motorway. A smaller share of low-cost flights uses Torp Sandefjord (TRF) about 110 km south of Oslo, which is a roughly 90 to 110 minute drive depending on traffic. Moss-Rygge (RYG) reopens periodically for charter and seasonal traffic.
A pre-booked transfer is the simplest option from any of these, especially in winter when icy road conditions can stretch journey times.
