About Venice

Few cities work like Venice. The historic centre is a cluster of 118 small islands linked by more than 400 bridges and threaded with 150 canals, and the only road in is the Liberty Bridge causeway from Mestre on the mainland. Cars stop at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car park, and from there everything is done on foot or by water. The population of the historic islands sits around 50,000, with roughly 249,000 across the wider municipality including Mestre and Marghera.

The classic sights are concentrated in San Marco, with the Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs all within five minutes of each other. Cross the Rialto Bridge into San Polo for the markets and into Dorsoduro for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. The Lido, Murano and Burano sit further out in the lagoon and are reached by vaporetto in 10 to 45 minutes.

Getting around

Walking is the default. Most of the historic centre is crossable in under an hour end to end, and signposting from Piazzale Roma towards San Marco and Rialto is consistent. The ACTV vaporetto is the water-bus, running every 10 to 20 minutes on the main Grand Canal route between roughly 05:00 and midnight. A single ticket costs EUR 9.50 and a 24 hour pass EUR 25, so most visitors staying more than a day buy a multi-day pass.

Private water taxis run from Piazzale Roma and Marco Polo Airport directly to most hotels with a canal entrance. They are quick but priced per boat, so they suit families or small groups with luggage more than solo travellers.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October give mild temperatures between 17 and 26 degrees and lower crowds than midsummer. July and August are hot, humid and busy, with the main routes between San Marco and Rialto often shoulder to shoulder by mid-morning. November to early March is quieter and cooler, with acqua alta high tides most likely between October and January.

Carnevale in late February pushes hotel rates to their annual peak and packs the city for ten days. The Biennale art and architecture exhibition runs from late spring to late autumn and brings a steady international audience across those months.

Transferring from Venice’s airports

Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is the main international airport at 13 km from Piazzale Roma, with land transfers of 20 to 30 minutes. Treviso (TSF) sits 31 km north and is mainly served by Ryanair and similar carriers, with a 40 to 55 minute drive to the city. Both airports work with private transfers that meet you in arrivals with a name sign and a fixed price.

If your hotel has its own water gate, you can also pre-book a private water taxi from VCE’s marina, which takes 25 to 40 minutes across the lagoon depending on destination.
