About Venice Marco Polo Airport
Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is the principal airport serving Venice and the Veneto region, named after the medieval merchant traveller from the city. It sits 13 km north-east of Piazzale Roma on the edge of the Venetian Lagoon at Tessera, with a single passenger terminal opened in 2002 and progressively extended. Annual passenger traffic runs at roughly 11 million, with carriers including ITA Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, easyJet, Delta and United operating year-round.
Long-haul service is more limited than at Milan Malpensa, with the heaviest international programme on European business hubs. The airport’s distinctive position on the lagoon means many travellers continue their journey on water rather than by road, with a marina directly outside the terminal serving private water taxis and shared Alilaguna boats.
Getting from Venice Marco Polo to Venice
Three routes work, depending on luggage and final destination. By road, a pre-booked transfer takes 20 to 30 minutes to Piazzale Roma, the only road head into the historic centre. By water, an Alilaguna shared boat runs to St Mark’s Square or Lido in 70 to 90 minutes, with departures every 30 minutes from around 06:00 to midnight. A private water taxi covers the same route in 25 to 40 minutes depending on hotel location.
For travellers with multiple bags, families, or hotels reached from Piazzale Roma on foot, a road transfer is usually fastest overall. For hotels with a canal entrance and small groups, a private water taxi is more convenient.
Terminals and pickup points
Marco Polo has a single passenger terminal across departures and arrivals. For arrivals, exit baggage reclaim into the ground floor hall and walk to the meeting area near the main exit doors. The driver holds a name sign and walks you to the short-stay pickup area outside the terminal.
For departures, drop-off is at the kerbside on the departures level. The terminal is compact and walks from kerb to gate are typically 10 to 15 minutes.
