About Málaga

Málaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol and Andalusia’s second city, with around 590,000 residents in the urban area. It is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, home to the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castles above the old town, and the most active cruise port on Spain’s southern coast. The city has reinvented itself over the last two decades as a year-round destination, with strong gastronomy, a refurbished port district at Muelle Uno and dozens of museums.

The city is a major cruise call on western Mediterranean itineraries, with more than 500,000 cruise passengers arriving each year. It is also one of Spain’s fastest-growing tech hubs, with Google, Vodafone and TDK opening engineering centres around the Málaga TechPark. The new Port district at Muelle Uno and the redeveloped Soho neighbourhood have repositioned Málaga as a year-round city break rather than only a beach gateway.

Getting around

The historic centre is pedestrianised and walkable end to end in 20 minutes. A two-line metro and a dense bus network reach the suburbs and the beaches at Pedregalejo and El Palo. The Cercanías C1 commuter train links the airport, María Zambrano station and Fuengirola every 20 minutes. For groups with luggage, late arrivals or onward trips to Marbella, Nerja and Ronda, a pre-booked private transfer removes the transfers and timetables from the equation.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October are the sweet spots, with daytime highs of 22 to 28 °C and the sea warm enough for swimming. July and August are hot inland (often above 35 °C) and busy on the coast, while winters are mild at 15 to 18 °C in the day. Easter (Semana Santa) draws large crowds and processions through the centre, so road closures around Calle Larios are common.

Local festivals to plan around include the Málaga Film Festival in March, the Feria de Málaga in mid-August (a week of daytime city celebrations and nighttime fairground at Cortijo de Torres) and the Christmas lights on Calle Larios from late November. Hotel demand spikes for each, and road traffic on the MA-20 ring road can be heavy.

Transferring from Málaga’s airports

Málaga Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) is the third busiest in mainland Spain after Madrid and Barcelona, with three terminals and tens of millions of passengers a year. It sits 8 km from the centre and 5 to 10 km from the eastern Costa del Sol resorts. Pre-booked private transfers meet you inside the terminal with a name sign, include 60 minutes of free wait, and quote one fixed price covering tolls and luggage.

Common transfer routes

Frequent routes from the Málaga area include:

  • Málaga Airport to central Málaga, around 15 to 25 minutes.
  • Málaga Airport to Torremolinos and Benalmádena, around 15 to 25 minutes.
  • Málaga Airport to Marbella and Puerto Banús, around 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Málaga Airport to Nerja and Frigiliana, around 60 to 75 minutes.
  • Málaga Port to Málaga Airport for post-cruise departures, around 20 minutes.

Longer transfers from Málaga also serve inland Andalusia. Antequera and El Caminito del Rey sit 50 to 60 km north, Ronda is around 100 km west, and Córdoba lies 160 km north (about 1h45 by road or 1 hour by AVE from María Zambrano). Operators can arrange one-way transfers to these destinations or split journeys with a stop on the way to or from AGP.
