About Stockholm
Stockholm is the capital of Sweden, built across 14 islands at the meeting point of Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. The municipality is home to around 980,000 people, with about 2.4 million in the wider region. Gamla Stan, the medieval old town, sits at the heart of the city, ringed by waterfront districts like Södermalm, Östermalm and the museum island of Djurgården.
The city is known for design, technology and a strong outdoor culture. Visitors split their time between the Vasa and ABBA museums, café tables on Hornsgatan, and short ferries out to the archipelago islands.
Getting around
Stockholm’s metro, the Tunnelbana, has three lines and over 100 stations, many decorated as public art installations. Trams, buses and commuter trains extend the network into the suburbs. In summer, public ferries become a practical commuter option and a sightseeing tour at the same time.
For airport arrivals, a pre-booked private transfer is often the calmest choice when you have luggage, several travellers, or an early or late flight outside peak public transport hours.
Best time to visit
Late May to early September is peak season, with long daylight hours, mild temperatures in the high teens to mid-twenties Celsius, and most archipelago boats running on full schedules. Midsummer in late June is a national highlight. October to March is cold and dark, but Christmas markets at Skansen and Gamla Stan and ice-skating at Kungsträdgården reward winter visitors. April and October are quieter shoulder months with lower hotel rates.
Transferring from Stockholm’s airports
Stockholm is served by three commercial airports. Arlanda (ARN) is the main hub, 37 km north of the centre and handling the bulk of long-haul and scheduled international flights. Bromma (BMA) sits only about 7 km northwest of the centre and handles short-haul domestic and regional traffic, with a typical drive time of 15 minutes. Skavsta (NYO) is about 100 km southwest, used mostly by low-cost carriers, with a drive of around 80 to 90 minutes.
A small number of travellers also use Västerås (VST), about 110 km west, for budget flights. Pre-booked transfers from any of these airports are quoted at a fixed price and operated by licensed Swedish drivers who meet your flight in arrivals.
