About Paris Gare d’Austerlitz

Gare d’Austerlitz is one of the six main termini of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine in the 13th arrondissement. Opened in 1840 and rebuilt to a design by Pierre-Louis Renaud in the 1860s, the station is named after Napoleon’s 1805 victory at the battle of Austerlitz. It handles around 25 million passengers a year across 21 platforms.

Historically the gateway to south-west France, Austerlitz lost most of its TGV traffic to Gare Montparnasse when the LGV Atlantique opened in 1990, and again when LGV Sud-Europe-Atlantique opened in 2017. Today it serves Intercités to Orléans, Limoges and Toulouse, the night-train network to the Pyrenees, Briançon and the Riviera, regional TER trains, and the RER C line through the city. A long-running modernisation project is reshaping the platforms and concourse.

Getting from Paris Gare d’Austerlitz to Paris

Austerlitz is on metro lines 5 and 10, the RER C, and several bus routes. It is walking distance to the Jardin des Plantes and the Latin Quarter. For hotel transfers with luggage, or onward connections to either airport, a pre-booked private car is faster and more comfortable, with a fixed fare and a driver waiting on the forecourt.

Night-train passengers in particular benefit from a pre-booked transfer, since arrivals at 06:00 or earlier predate the metro’s first run and the taxi rank can be slow on weekend mornings. The driver tracks the scheduled arrival, waits up to 60 minutes for free if the train is delayed, and helps load luggage straight from the platform exit into the vehicle on boulevard de l’Hôpital.

Platforms and pickup points

  • Platforms 1 – 21: long-distance Intercités, TER and night trains, all under the main train shed
  • RER C (lower level): suburban line to Versailles, Pontoise and Massy

The road pickup is on the forecourt outside the main entrance on boulevard de l’Hôpital. There is a separate drop-off lane along the western side of the station that the driver may use during peak periods.
