About Paris Gare Montparnasse

Gare Montparnasse is the main western terminus of Paris, sitting in the 14th and 15th arrondissements on the left bank. The original 1840 station was replaced in 1969 by the present concrete and glass complex below the 210-metre Tour Montparnasse. It handles around 75 million passengers a year and is the Paris hub of the LGV Atlantique high-speed line (opened 1990) and LGV Sud-Europe-Atlantique (opened 2017), which together put Bordeaux just over two hours from the capital.

The station is split across three levels: the upper concourse with shops and ticket halls, the platform level with 28 platforms across the Montparnasse 1 main hall and Montparnasse 3 (Vaugirard) wing, and the metro and Transilien levels below. Metro lines 4, 6, 12 and 13 all stop here.

Getting from Paris Gare Montparnasse to Paris

Montparnasse is on four metro lines and is walking distance to the Luxembourg Gardens and Saint-Germain. For groups, families with children, or anyone with TGV-sized luggage, a pre-booked private transfer to your hotel or onward to the airport is the more comfortable option. The fare is fixed at booking and a licensed driver meets you on the forecourt with a name sign.

Montparnasse is the closest of the major Paris termini to Orly, around 16 km south, which makes it the natural start point for a TGV-to-flight connection towards southern Europe or the Caribbean. The drive typically takes 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. For Charles de Gaulle, allow 45 to 65 minutes for the 30 km cross-city route via the boulevard périphérique.

Platforms and pickup points

  • Platforms 1 – 24 (Montparnasse 1): main hall, used by most TGV inOui and Ouigo departures
  • Platforms 25 – 28 (Montparnasse 3, Vaugirard): secondary hall at the south-west end, used for some Intercités and TGV services to Brittany
  • Transilien N (lower level): suburban services towards Versailles-Chantiers and Rambouillet

Pickup defaults to place Raoul Dautry in front of the main entrance. Vaugirard arrivals are a longer walk; the driver will guide you via the connecting corridor.
