About Paris Gare Saint Lazare

Gare Saint Lazare is the oldest of the Paris termini, opened in 1837 by the Compagnie de Paris à Saint-Germain. The present Second Empire building was completed in 1889 under architect Juste Lisch and stretches between rue Saint Lazare and rue de Rome in the 8th arrondissement. The station was famously painted multiple times by Claude Monet, and the bronze sculpture L’Heure de tous by Arman, stacking 1920s suitcases on cour de Rome, marks the front entrance.

The station handles around 100 million passengers a year across 27 platforms, almost all on Transilien and Intercités services. It is the main commuter and Normandy gateway of Paris but, unusually for the major termini, sees no TGV trains. The metro hub below the station sits on lines 3, 12, 13 and 14, with RER E (line A within the new Eole extension) running through the lower concourse.

Getting from Paris Gare Saint Lazare to Paris

Saint Lazare is in the heart of the 8th arrondissement, a 10-minute walk to the Opera Garnier and the grands magasins. For onward journeys to hotels with luggage or to the airports, a pre-booked private car is the easier choice, with a fixed fare and a driver waiting on cour de Rome. The station’s shopping gallery on the upper level makes the route to the forecourt straightforward, but the surrounding streets can be busy at commute times.

Many travellers use Saint Lazare as a transit point between a Normandy holiday and a flight home. Allow 35 to 55 minutes from the station to Charles de Gaulle and 30 to 50 minutes to Orly, and add a comfortable airline check-in cushion on top. The driver tracks the inbound Intercités arrival where possible and uses the 60 minutes of free wait time to absorb any short delay between Caen, Le Havre or Rouen and Paris.

Platforms and pickup points

  • Grandes lignes platforms (1 – 8): Intercités to Normandy
  • Transilien J and L platforms (9 – 27): suburban services towards Mantes-la-Jolie, Versailles-Rive-Droite and Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche

The road pickup is on cour de Rome at the central main entrance. A secondary drop-off lane runs along rue de Rome on the western side of the station.
