About Paris Gare de l’Est
Gare de l’Est is one of the six grand termini of Paris, sitting in the 10th arrondissement between Gare du Nord and the boulevard de Magenta. It opened in 1849 as the Embarcadère de Strasbourg and now handles around 35 million passengers a year across 30 platforms. The station is the eastern gateway of French long-distance rail, with TGV inOui and Lyria services to Strasbourg, Luxembourg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich and Zurich, plus Intercités and TER routes through Champagne and Lorraine.
The Beaux-Arts façade by François-Alexandre Cendrier is grade-listed and the great vaulted train shed inside is one of the largest 19th-century single-span roofs in Paris. The huge painting by Albert Herter, Le Départ des poilus, hangs over the main concourse and commemorates soldiers leaving for the front in 1914.
Getting from Paris Gare de l’Est to Paris
Gare de l’Est is on metro lines 4, 5 and 7, with onward connections across the city. For hotels with luggage, suburban destinations and the airports, a pre-booked private car is faster and less stressful than carrying suitcases on the metro. The pickup is right outside on the forecourt, the fare is fixed at booking, and a licensed local driver meets you with a name sign.
The station is a popular start point for travellers connecting from a London Eurostar at Gare du Nord onto an ICE service to Frankfurt, Stuttgart or Munich, since the two stations sit on opposite sides of the same square. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the cross-station walk if you have luggage, or pre-book a short private transfer for the 400-metre hop if you have a tight onward connection.
Platforms and pickup points
The station’s platforms are arranged in a fan from the main concourse:
- Platforms 2 – 12: long-distance and international TGV/ICE services
- Platforms 13 – 30: Transilien suburban lines (lines P and K)
All road pickups happen on the place du 11 Novembre 1918 in front of the central entrance, with secondary access from rue du 8 Mai 1945 along the eastern flank.
